Study on the safety of glass food storage box during microwave heating

Publish Time: 2025-01-02
In modern kitchens, glass food storage boxes are favored for their safe materials and high transparency, but their safety in microwave heating needs to be further explored.

First of all, material properties are the key foundation. Glass storage boxes used in microwave ovens are mostly borosilicate glass, which has a very low thermal expansion coefficient compared to ordinary glass, which means that when the temperature changes drastically, such as rapid heating in a microwave oven, the glass is not prone to the risk of bursting due to thermal expansion and contraction. Borosilicate glass can withstand instantaneous high temperature shocks, ensure the integrity of the container structure, and lay a solid foundation for safe heating.

Secondly, the sealing design has a significant impact. Some glass storage boxes are equipped with sealed lids. If they are not used properly in a microwave oven, the accumulation of internal pressure in a sealed environment may cause danger. A qualified design should have a vent or an exhaust device that can be manually opened during heating, which can allow steam to be discharged in a timely manner, balance the internal and external pressures, prevent the lid from bursting and the glass from breaking due to a sudden increase in pressure, and ensure the safety of users and the kitchen environment.

Furthermore, the heating time and power adaptation cannot be ignored. Different power levels of microwave ovens correspond to different heating efficiencies. If high power is used to heat food in a glass storage box for a long time, even if the material is heat-resistant, excessive heat accumulation may exceed the glass's tolerance limit. Users need to reasonably adjust the heating time and power based on factors such as the amount of food and the initial temperature, and follow the microwave oven manual to avoid safety hazards caused by overheating.

From the perspective of food type, different foods change their states during the heating process. Foods with high water content, such as soups and stews, evaporate violently when heated, which has a great impact on glass containers; and oily foods, due to their heat transfer characteristics, may be locally overheated. Therefore, different heating strategies need to be adopted for different foods, such as stirring soups and intermittently heating oily foods to evenly dissipate heat and reduce the uneven heating pressure of glass storage boxes.

In addition, daily maintenance is also related to safety. If there are fine cracks and scratches on the surface of the glass storage box, these defects will concentrate stress when heated in a microwave oven, which is very likely to induce rupture. Regularly checking the integrity of the container and replacing damaged boxes in a timely manner are necessary operations to ensure the safety of each heating.

Through actual testing of glass food storage boxes from multiple brands, we found that as long as the above points are followed and strict control is exercised over materials, design, and usage methods, glass food storage boxes can safely and efficiently assist in heating food in a microwave oven, safeguarding a convenient and healthy diet. However, as products are iterated, we still need to continue to pay attention to the impact of new materials and new technologies on the safety of microwave heating, and continuously improve usage specifications.
